An energy-efficient wood fibre machine has been developed to meet the demand for growing media

Extruding and refining technology has been devised by Premier Tech Systems and Automation to allow growing media producers to use alternative raw materials in their product mixes.

Amidst the growing demand for wood fibre to complement soil mixes, so called growing media, Premier Tech has introduced its brand new BPE series wood fibre machine. This compact, robust, and energy-efficient equipment allows for on-site production of wood fibre.

The patented technology applies high pressure to the raw materials, generating heat above 100deg C, which produces and sanitises the fibre, meeting RHP standards (the quality mark applies for substrate producers, substrate suppliers, extraction and production sites of raw materials).

With a production capacity of up to 12 m3/h and an expansion ratio of up to 1:3, the unit consumes 30% less energy per cubic metre produced compared to typical refiners, resulting in significant cost savings, says the company.

Various wood by-products can be used, including white soft wood chips, forest residue, and compost wood. The resulting fibre produced maintains its volume when mixed and is billed as having excellent water dispersion capacity for root development.

According to Premier Tech, the machine’s investment cost provides an attractive ROI and total cost of ownership.

Versatile in use, the machine can process various local and renewable raw materials, reducing transport and overall carbon footprint. It can also be adjusted to fit diverse fraction sizes, moisture content and finished grades.
