Laurie has been integral in starting  conversations that lead to establishing standards within the industry that are to become best practice for our members; canvassing not only UK entities and governing bodies but negotiating with our opposites in America. Laurie recently launched the UK vision industry standard (UKViS) at Automation UK 2024 which at the time was co-located with Machine Vision Conference (MVC). Being able to publicly announce the standard with the support of UK Industrial Vision Association (UKIVA) members Acrovision and Scorpion Vision.

Setting standards are very much part of what Automate UK wants to present to its members and the world. By delivering a professional standard in the areas of Automation, Robotics, and Vision, Automate UK hopes to provide the manufacturing  end user with options that they can count on, and giving its members accreditation that will pay dividends for return on interest and reputation enhancement.

Laurie Barnes, Automate UK CTO, said. “My recent appointment shows my commitment to provide the biggest knowledge base and expertise that I can to Automate UK members and associated end users. We recognise the importance of standards, in particular the BSI, to our members and manufacturing, and we want to support them to achieve this aim. The standards we set today will shape the workforce of the future.”

As Laurie takes his place on the ISO/TC 313 committees he aims to bring the voice of the Automate UK Members  to the BSI and standards committees, providing members with information on upcoming standards and changes that are needed to be at the forefront of the industry. There are also plans to increase member benefits with the BSi in the near future.
