HMRC Help and support for importing and exporting

HMRC has made available a variety of information sources to make sure businesses have the support they need to keep their business moving.

Guides for importing and exporting between Great Britain and the EU

Give HMRC a call

HMRC’s Customer Service Advisors are available to answer your queries on the Customs and International Trade helpline. They will help you with importing, exporting and customs reliefs.

The helpline is open from 8am to 10pm, Monday to Friday, and from 8am to 4pm at weekends. Call to speak to an HMRC advisor on 0300 322 9434.

Trader Support Service

If your business moves goods into, out of or through Northern Ireland, there is a free-to-use Trader Support Service to update you on any changes that affect your business.

SME Brexit Support Fund

If you are an SME that is new to importing and exporting processes, you can claim up to £2,000. With this money you will be able to pay for practical support including training, that includes either online courses or trainers that will come into your business. The training can cover customs, rules of origin and VAT.

Importing goods into the UK and re-exporting to an EU country – process flowchart

Use the new Gov.UK flowchart to help you find out if the goods you want to re-export to the EU will be eligible for preferential rates of duty or for Returned Goods Relief in the EU instead.

VAT-Registered Business

HMRC will send a letter to all UK VAT-registered businesses in April 2021 about the guidance available to help them trade with the EU.
